Holly Arends Murphy
Holly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s College in 1999 with a double major in Religious Studies and Philosophy. In 2005 she graduated from Birthwise Midwifery School and passed the NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) exam to become a Certified Professional Midwife. That same year, she opened Birch Moon Midwifery, LLC.
After graduating from Birthwise Midwifery School, Holly joined the school’s faculty and delights in educating a new generation of midwives. She is an active member of several professional organizations and has served on the boards of the Maine Association of Certified Professional Midwives (MACPM) and the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives (NACPM). She is pleased to be an advocate for women, babies, and reformation of the maternity care system by supporting local and national efforts.
Since attending her first birth in 2002, Holly has been witness to over 300 births. She has gained a broad range of experience working with dozens of midwives and welcoming babies in homes and birth centers in the US, Canada, and the Philippines.
Holly enjoys life on the coast of Maine with her husband Matt, and their children, Linus, Odin, and Louise, sailing, cooking, knitting, and brewing. When her hands are not holding a baby (hers or another’s), they are often full of wool, food, dirt, wood, clay, or a project of some other sort.
Hope is a Certified Professional Midwife living in Camden, Maine. She graduated from Birthwise Midwifery School in 2012 and started her own practice in Spring of 2013. In 2014 she joined Birch Moon Midwifery as a collaborating midwife. During her years of formal midwifery education she apprenticed with home birth midwives in Maine and Vermont, and spent time learning and volunteering at high-volume birth centers in Senegal and Indonesia. Hope developed the desire to become a midwife when she was studying alternative medicine as a college freshman in Costa Rica in 2004. During that time she started an informal apprenticeship with a homebirth midwife and witnessed her first two births. She spent the next four months living and working with a traditional midwife in rural El Salvador; it was here that her desire was met with the drive and dedication to become a midwife. Hope has had the honor of attending over 150 births in 7 different countries. She is committed to providing thoughtful, competent care to each woman who seeks her assistance in the profound process of childbirth.
Hope grew up on Green’s Island, off of Vinalhaven, Maine, and is delighted to again be living on Maine’s midcoast and serving the families of her home communities. She offers full midwifery care as well as birth and postpartum doula care. She lives with her husband Jamie and their son Asa, who was born at home in October of 2013. She enjoys outdoor adventures of all kinds, cooking, sewing, reading, and cuddling babies every chance she gets.
In 2014 Holly and Hope began working together to design a practice that would support the close midwife/client relationship that has been a hallmark of their care while also providing the continuous availability that a larger practice can offer. The result is a new model of care in which a “primary midwife” will coordinate your care and conduct the bulk of your appointments. The other “support midwife” will be present for at least one prenatal visit, your birth, and possibly one postpartum visit, and will be available to you when your primary midwife is not. This allows you to have focused care from a single midwife while also becoming familiar with both of the midwives. Ultimately you will have a birth team composed of two collaborating CPMs familiar to you.
Holly and Hope are both graduates of Birthwise Midwifery School and are committed to educating the next generation of midwives. In addition to two midwives, your birth team may also include an apprentice.
