At the core of midwifery care is the notion that people are encouraged to make informed decisions about their care. In this model the midwife and the client share the decision-making responsibility. The midwife contributes knowledge and clinical expertise and the client contributes wisdom about their body and their values. This shared decision-making model yields the best care.

Certified Professional Midwives are independent care providers licensed in the majority of states, including Maine. The CPM’s scope includes routine reproductive healthcare, maternity care from pre-conception to 12 weeks postpartum, and newborn care for up to 8 weeks.

CPMs are experts in the care of healthy, low-risk people. Their professional training focuses primarily on providing care outside of a hospital setting, although they also utilize conventional tools such as laboratory testing and ultrasound to optimize outcomes. The goal is comprehensive, safe care rendered in a way that engages and empowers clients to be active participants in their care.
